The red carpet is the perfect place for a bit of hair inspiration. The hairstyles are glamorous, creative and, most importantly, turn the heads of everybody watching. From ‘effortless’ updos to flawless loose styles, the latest trends are always injected with a good bit of glitter and sparkle on the red carpet. Here are just some of our favourites from 2016.
Short and sweet
This year has been all about short, shoulder-length hair that is worn loose and with a slightly messy edge. In fact, celebrities that have been rocking this look on the red carpet – Emma Stone, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Sienna Miller, to name just a few – have been aptly named ‘the bob brigade’. Low-maintenance, sexy and amazingly versatile, the tussled bob is perfect for red carpets, offices and lazy days alike – it’s entirely up to you how you wear it!
The low, looped bun
Less is often more when it comes to hairstyles on the red carpet. While the dresses that celebrities wear at film premiers or award ceremonies are always stunning, with intricate designs and luxurious fabrics, hairstyles can be comparatively low-key – and still look absolutely incredible. Take the low, looped bun, for instance: sported by Sarah Hyland at the Emmys, the hairstyle was an elegant, effortlessly graceful accompaniment to her floral embroidered dress. Anne Hathaway had gained media attention with a similar low bun style at the Oscars in 2011, which her hairstylist described as an “easy, fun, romantic look”.
The style is simple to do yourself: first, secure the hair into a low ponytail, making sure you have brushed out all the knots and tangles. Take the end of the ponytail, and fold the hair upwards into a loop, with the ends of the hair pointing up. Secure the hair with a band. Next, cover the hairband by taking a piece of hair from one side of the loop and wrapping it round the band, securing it with a pin, and repeat until the band is covered. If it looks a little messy, don’t worry: that’s the point!
Braided updos
Braided updos were everywhere at this year’s Oscars, with almost too many variations to count. Our favourites were Felicity Jones’s braided bun with star-shaped accessories; Jaime King’s powerful but feminine French braid crossed with a ponytail; and Zoë Kravitz’s silver braids, which she tied back into a tight plaited bun. The great thing about braided updos is that they can be as simple as you like and still look really effective. In fact, if you’re going straight out after work, you don’t even have to change your hair – you can just add a few sparkly hairpins for a more glamorous finish.
