When you walk down the haircare aisle in your local cosmetics shop, it can sometimes seem like there is an endless array of products available, each of which claims to be essential for beautifully styled and healthy hair. While a well-stocked bathroom with the latest haircare products is great, it is important to have the basics in place first. With this in mind, we have come up with the five items that are essential to strong, healthy and beautifully glossy hair.

Shampoo that suits your hair type

Many consumers see shampoo as one of the most basic items in a daily haircare routine. But if not used properly it can actually be a big cause of damage. That’s why it is important that you find a shampoo that’s suited to your hair type (fine, thick, greasy, dry, etc.) and that you follow advice on how often you should be washing it. Your hair will not necessarily need to be washed every day – sometimes a soap-free rinse or a touch of conditioner is enough.

Heat protection spray

We hairdressers are constantly reminding our clients to apply a heat protection spray before using a hairdryer or tongs. This is not a ‘nice to have’ product; it is essential! The spray forms a protective barrier on the hair, which lessens the impact of the heat and reduces damage.

Wide-toothed comb

Many of our clients talk to us about brushing their hair through when it is wet. Separating out the individual strands is definitely a good idea before drying, but using a brush is a definite no-no, as wet hair is highly susceptible to breakage and can be damaged if treated roughly. A wide-toothed comb is the ideal tool for this job, and a worthwhile buy!

Hairdryer with a cool setting

Having a hairdryer is key if you want to achieve that straight-out-of-a-salon feel every day. To avoid heat damage, make sure it has a cool setting. If you have fine hair, keep it on a medium setting. People with thick hair can go a bit hotter, but finish with a quick cool blast, as this will boost its glossiness.

Rounded brush

Once you have rough-dried your hair, using a rounded brush is a great way to style it so that you achieve a smooth, glossy and flyaway-free finish. As well as separating out the strands so that the hair is less frizzy, a rounded brush stimulates the scalp, which in turn promotes the production of natural oils and ensures that the hair follicles are healthy.
