The scenario is always the same: the House of Klamer wizards work their magic and have you skipping out of the salon with beautiful bouncing locks; however, come two days later, you can’t seem to recreate that just-out-of-the-salon look at home. Never fear! Perfecting the rough blow-dry techniqueWhat is a rough dry?
Fortunately, rough drying is a relatively simple technique, which, when done right, can produce incredible results – after all, we could all do without the humidity-induced frizz that creeps up on us during the summer months!
Basically, rough drying means that you use your fingers instead of a hairbrush when drying your hair. That being said, the name is slightly deceiving, because, when done right, rough drying isn’t exactly rough. Let us explain…
The two types of rough drying
There are two types of rough drying, which lead to two very different looks. Before you begin, be sure to wash your hair thoroughly and add a heat-protecting product to the ends. Next, if you’re looking for volume, use your fingers to push your hair up towards your roots, following with a powerful hairdryer held at around 45 degrees (we recommend using a hairdryer with a nozzle tip, as it allows you to direct the air flow to the section of hair you are working on). Alternatively, if you’re looking for a more sleek n’ smooth style (as opposed to full-on volume), carry out the same steps, but, instead of pointing the dryer towards your roots, position it at 45 degrees, facing downwards.
Top tip: finish your at-home blow dry with a blast of cold air to set your style in place and also close the hair cuticles, leading to extra dazzling shine fit for the red carpet!
Unlike the name suggests, we reiterate that you shouldn’t get carried away and just go crazy with the hairdryer, as, more often than not, this means you could end up spending more time correcting than styling. Although the idea is to be more spontaneous and free-flowing than if you were using a hairbrush, this technique still requires precision.
